Chapter 10: Letters Over the Air

On Sunday the man in Tacoma came on the air sounding nervous.

"Got something unusual for the doc," he said. "Over."

Boone and I looked at each other.

The shack was empty for once. Everybody else had already had their two minutes.

"Go ahead," Boone said. "Over."

"Fellow called my house Thursday. Got my number from your friend Gwen. Said his name was Marshall Ludlow. Over."

My stomach went cold.

"He asked if I'd read you a letter. I said I'm not a mailman. He said please. He said it about six times. So I wrote it down. Over."

Boone's hand hovered over the switch.

"Your call, Doc," he said quietly.

I thought about turning it off.

I thought about the window in the white office, and his hands in his pockets.

"Let him read it," I said.

Boone pushed the button. "Go ahead. Over."

Paper rustled in Tacoma.

The old man cleared his throat and read slowly.

"Thea. I was in that room because Amber told the board I'd be there. If I didn't stand there, she'd call the merger off that afternoon, and I'd lose the vote that lets me open the medical division's files."

He paused.

"I'm collecting the recall file. The real one. The one they buried. I need three more weeks. I couldn't say a word on camera without warning her what I'm doing. I know how that looked. I know it looked exactly like the lobby."

The old man stopped.

"There's more," he said. "Over."

I pushed the button myself.

"Is there anything in it that isn't about him? Over."

A long crackle.

"Not really, no. Over."
