Chapter 16: Dry Creek
"A Ring challenge is simple," Joxe said.
The afternoon light lay across his desk.
"Gorka stands up at Midsummer and says my son is unfit."
He folded his hands.
"If Mikel cannot hold the heirship in front of the whole pack, he loses it."
"Hold it how?" Fionn asked.
"However the Ring decides. Usually teeth."
Mikel said nothing at all.
Joxe took off his glasses.
"I don't believe he can beat you, son," he said.
"But Gorka isn't a fool. He saw what he saw in the hall. He'll plan something that isn't a fair fight."
That was Monday.
On Thursday, at noon, Mikel took Fionn by the hand.
He walked him out of the barn in front of two hands and a dog.
"Where are we going?" Fionn said.
"Dry Creek."
"We have forty ewes to vaccinate," Fionn said.
"The ewes will wait. Midsummer is five weeks off, and my uncle will try something."
Mikel's thumb moved on his knuckles.
"I'd like one day in my life where I don't think about him. Come swimming."
Fionn went.
The swimming hole lay in a fold of red rock three miles up the creek.
It was a deep green pool under a ledge, ringed with willow.
