Chapter 18: Control
Mikel did not remember the drive.
He remembered the north fence.
He remembered a hard pull behind his breastbone, and a single word that was not a word.
Come.
He had left a ewe half-tagged in the chute and a wire cutter on the ground.
The truck had done the rest.
Now he stood in the broken door of the lambing barn, and the whole world had narrowed to a single red point.
Fionn lay in the straw.
His face was swollen on one side, his lip split, his shirt torn open over bruises that were already turning black.
One eye was shut.
The other found Mikel, and held.
Two of Gorka's hands stood over him.
They had not run.
They were too stunned, and one of them still had his fist cocked.
Mikel's wolf came up through him.
It did not come the way it came in a fight, cold and controlled.
It came all at once, with no thought in it.
His vision went gold at the edges, and a sound tore out of his chest that he had never made.
He took the first man by the throat.
He lifted him off the floor and slammed him back into the post, and the post cracked, and the man's boots kicked at nothing.
