Chapter 21: Lead Rope

Fionn took the lead rope down from the nail inside Mikel's closet door.

It was old braided cotton, soft with years of use, and it had held every horse and ewe on the ranch.

He ran it through his fingers and looked at the man sitting on the edge of the bed.

"Hands," he said.

Mikel looked at the rope.

He looked at Fionn.

Then he held out both wrists, together, palms up, and his eyes were gold and completely steady.

"Yes," he said.

"I haven't said what for."

"I don't need you to."

Fionn's heart gave a hard slow thump.

They had come home from the Ring in the truck without speaking, and climbed the back stairs without turning on a light.

The house was silent.

The pack was still on the ridge, singing, and the sound drifted down over the sage.

He wound the rope around Mikel's wrists, twice, and knotted it.

He did it carefully.

"Too tight?"

"No."

"If you want it off, you say so, and I'll cut it," Fionn said.

"I won't."

"Say it anyway."

"Stop," Mikel said, in a low rough voice. "That's the word. I'll say it if I need it."

"Good."

Fionn raised the bound wrists and looped the free end of the rope over the iron bedpost, and pulled.
