Chapter 24: The Next Claim
"I want to kneel at the Ring," Mikel said.
Fionn lay very still beside him.
"I told you in front of the pack that I didn't want you under me."
"I know."
"I meant it," Fionn said.
"I know you did," Mikel said.
Mikel turned on his side.
His gold eyes were steady and clear in the gray light.
"The moon made me kneel. I never got to choose it. I want to do it once with my eyes open, with everyone watching."
"Why?" Fionn said.
"Because it's mine to give."
Fionn thought about it for a long time.
He thought of the Ring in April, and the knee in the dirt, and the lie about the ground.
He thought of the kitchen floor.
He thought of the man who had put down every weight he carried, once, in a bedroom, and slept.
"All right," he said. "On one condition."
"Name it."
"When you're done, I pull you up. You don't stay down. You're not a man who stays down."
Mikel's smile was slow and wide, and a little wet at the edges.
"Deal," he said.
On Thursday the August moon rose enormous and gold over Table Rock.
The whole pack stood inside the stones, and the air smelled of sage and smoke.
At the edge of the circle, five young wolves waited in their best clothes.
