Chapter 22: His Own Name

Pyo Dae-ho stood in the hospital corridor with a bouquet of white lilies.

A lawyer in a gray suit stood a step behind him, holding a leather briefcase against his chest.

It was early morning, and the whole burn unit smelled of antiseptic and flowers.

Seo-won came out of Tae-min's room and shut the door behind him.

His palms were wrapped, and his voice was a scrape.

"Seo-won," Pyo said warmly. "Thank God. They told me you carried him out yourself."

"Get out of this hospital."

"I came to see how our brave fireman is. And to bring something to your attention." He nodded at the lawyer. "A short statement."

The lawyer opened the case and drew out two pages.

"Last night's fire began in a faulty contractor's panel," Pyo said. "A tragedy, and no one could have foreseen it."

"Daon's designers acted in good faith. You'll sign that, as will Mr. Ko."

"In return I'll see that the firm covers all of your medical costs."

"Generously."

The lawyer held out a pen.

Seo-won looked at it.

"You deferred the inspection," he said. "On the tag. Two days after your own party date."

"A tag is a piece of paper."

"So is a certificate."

Pyo's smile did not move.

"Be careful, Seo-won. You signed the doors."

The elevator at the end of the corridor opened with a soft chime.

The owner's gray man stepped out in the same gray suit, with his notebook under his arm.

Behind him walked Lim Eun-seo in her black parka.

Behind her came two men in plain jackets, with badges clipped to their belts.

Pyo's lawyer took a very small step backward.

"Mr. Pyo," said the gray man, in his dry exact voice. "I thought I would find you here."

"Good morning. What a dreadful night."

"The Fire Institute ran its furnace test at seven this morning. On the installed sample, as I ordered."

"I attended in person."

"The glass door failed at nineteen minutes."

Pyo said nothing.

"Engineer Lim brought me the original report. A technician at the laboratory gave a written statement last night."
