Chapter 22: Nobody Left
My brother looked at our mother for a long moment.
"No," he said.
"Sweetheart."
"I'm not lying. You took my box cutter. You told me to go the long way to the usher so I wouldn't see the row."
His voice broke on the last word, and he kept going.
"You lied to me, and then you hugged me at the airport."
My mother's hand went to her throat.
"I did it for this family," she said.
The room stayed silent.
"He was going to leave us," she said, quicker now, to the faces around her. "Gabriel never loved me. He was always looking at her. I only wanted what I was owed."
"You wanted his house," said her oldest friend.
She had been sitting in the second row with a plate of cake on her knee, and now she set it down.
"Rosalyn," she said, "you told me last month that you were going to retire to Florida with a man named Dale."
"That was private."
"You put your own daughter in a seat, and you filmed her."
"She's twenty-two. She isn't a child."
"She is your child," the woman said.
A low murmur began on the stairs and ran along the hall and into the den.
The partner in the gray blazer stepped forward.
"Rosalyn, the office will need your keys on Monday," he said quietly. "And whatever Dale had you sign."
"You can't."
"We can. I'll bring the paperwork."
She turned to Gabriel with her mouth trembling.
"Gabe. Please. You know I was only frightened. I love you."
"You love the house," he said.
