Chapter 10: The Front Door
Three cars were parked in front of the house when we turned onto the street.
The driver had called ahead from the kitchen door, and Nikos took the last block at a crawl.
"Stay behind me," he said.
"No."
"Lena."
"He's my patient," I said. "Nobody goes into that house without me."
He looked at me for a second in the dashboard light.
Then he got out and came around and opened my door.
The business agent stood at the foot of the stoop in his navy jacket with four men behind him.
The street lamp lit his shaved head.
He smiled when he saw us, the same smile in the same place.
"Mr. Galanis," he said. "And the nurse."
"What do you want?" Nikos said.
"We've been to see Mr. Cullen's family tonight," the agent said. "They'd like to hear his voice."
"He's sedated," Nikos said.
"Then they'd like to see his face."
"No," I said.
He turned his head slowly and looked at me.
"Excuse me?"
"He has a tube in his chest and a line in his arm," I said.
"He's on a drug that keeps him from tearing it out."
I did not look away from the agent.
"Nobody is moved, nobody is woken and nobody comes in. That's my call, and I'm making it."
"Your call," the agent said.
"I'm his nurse."
"You're the hired help," the agent said pleasantly.
He came up two steps.
"Sweetheart, I've known Hugh Cullen twenty years. I'm going to walk in that door and see him, and you're going to step aside."
"His numbers are stable," I said. "His lung is expanding."
"His color is good, and I changed his dressing at six."
My voice was steady, and I let it be.
"He is alive and he is getting better. If you want that on paper, I'll write it down."
"I don't need it on paper. I need to see him."
He reached out and closed his hand around my wrist.
