Chapter 13: No Lies in the Sickroom

"Who did?" I said.

Nikos set the mug down on the butcher block.

"My brother."

"Say the rest of it."

"Yianni had a gun I did not know he carried," Nikos said. "Hugh said something about our father, and Yianni fired once."

He turned the mug a quarter turn on the wood.

"I came through the dining room and took it out of his hand," he said. "Then I stood there, and you opened the door."

I had been braced for a lie, and there was none, and somehow that was worse.

"My grandmother told you to ask me again," he said quietly. "I would rather you had asked on Sunday."

"Why didn't you tell me?" I asked.

"Because you would have gone to the police."

"I might have," I said.

"And they would have taken Yianni," he said. "The hall would have found him inside a week, wherever they put him."

He said it flatly, without any heat.

"The hall takes a life for a life," he said. "I decided on the first night that it would be mine or nobody's."

"You decided," I said.
