Chapter 16: The Hall

The hiring hall in Dundalk was a long brick room.

At one end a counter held a board where the day's jobs were chalked.

Two hundred men stood on the concrete between rows of folding chairs, and every one of them turned to look at the door.

I pushed Hugh Cullen's wheelchair through it.

Nikos walked on my right with his hand resting on the small of my back.

It was so light that no one but me could have felt it.

His thumb moved once against my spine.

Yianni walked behind us in a dark suit, white-faced, with his hands shut at his sides.

The room went quiet in a wave, from the front to the back.

"Evening," Hugh said, from the chair. "I understand you've been missing me."

Someone laughed, and someone else swore, and the sound was a relief.

I wheeled him down the center aisle to the table at the front.

The business agent was standing behind it in his navy jacket with the hall's patch on the chest.

He had his bandaged right hand in a sling.

His smile stayed in one place.

"Hugh," he said warmly. "Thank God. We were told you couldn't travel."

"Told by who?"

"There was a lot of concern."

"I'm sure there was," Hugh said. "I understand you called a vote on my chair."
