Chapter 21: The Sickroom
"Gown," I said. "On. Now."
Nikos looked at the thin blue cotton rectangle in my hand and then at me.
"It will not close," he said.
"Then it will not close."
It was the twenty-sixth of December.
The rented hospital bed still stood in the back bedroom on the second floor, with the tag on the rail.
He had never called the company to take it away.
I had found that out an hour ago, when I walked in to put a pile of folded towels on the dresser.
I had walked out again and come back with my bag.
He stood in the middle of the room in his shirt and trousers, and I watched him decide whether to laugh.
"Nurse Wojcik," he said, solemnly. "I feel fine."
"That's what they all say."
"I'm in perfect health."
"We'll see," I said. "Strip."
He undressed.
He took off his shirt, and the cross swung on its chain.
He took off his trousers and his shorts and stood naked, long and dark and heavy, already half hard.
I put the gown around his shoulders and tied the single string behind his neck.
It covered his chest.
It did not cover anything else.
"Sit on the bed," I said.
He sat on the edge of the narrow mattress, with the rail at his hip and the gown open over his thighs.
I took my stethoscope out of the bag and hung it round my neck.
"Lie back."
He lay back.
The bed was too short for him, and his feet hung off the end.
I pressed the button.
The head of the bed rose with a soft electric whine until he was half sitting, propped on the plastic pillow.
His eyes went to the remote in my hand.
"That's cruel," he said.
"That's equipment."
I leaned over him and put the cold disc of the stethoscope against his chest.
He flinched and breathed in sharply.
"Breathe," I said.
He breathed.
"Again."
I moved the disc down, over the scar on his ribs and across the hard slabs of his stomach, and he watched my face.
