Chapter 30: Out of the Smoke

I didn't make it to the fence on two legs.

My wolf came up through me so fast it hurt, and my shirt tore off my back in the parking lot.

I caught Gran's camera strap in my teeth as it fell.

Then I was over the fence and into the smoke.

It was like running into a closed oven.

The air burned my nose, my eyes, the inside of my mouth around the leather strap.

I couldn't see ten feet.

I didn't need to.

I put my nose down, and there he was on the ground, under all of it.

Woodsmoke. Pine pitch. Wet fur.

Him.

I ran his scent up the bench road the way I'd run the fireline under the moon, low and fast.

Fire stood on both sides of the road, roaring in the grass.

Sparks landed on my back and I didn't stop to shake them off.

A fence post went up beside me.

I jumped a fallen power line and kept going.

The red barn came out of the smoke all at once.

It was burning from the roof down, black smoke pouring out of the hayloft.

Black. Something somebody built.

The ranch house with the green tin roof stood beyond it, and its porch was on fire.

Behind the house, the hill rose up steep, with an old stone root cellar dug into the bottom of it.

The cellar door was shut.

And on the ground in front of it lay a man, human again, with the rags of a yellow fire shirt caught around one arm.

I dropped the camera strap.
