Chapter 13: The Forged Hand
Brigitte laid the paper on the council table and smoothed it flat with her palm.
"A transfer of the Brandauer dock share," she said. "Signed by the bride, dated the Monday before the wedding."
The hall was the same one where Matthias and I had been married, with the same long table and the same three elders behind it.
Nobody had put flowers out this time.
Brigitte wore gray pearls and a soft smile, and Lukas sat beside her in a clean suit, looking sorry for all of us.
"The share passed to my son the night before she vanished," Brigitte said. "Whatever she signed afterward, in a Kell house, in a Kell bed, gave away nothing."
The elder in the Reinholt chair slid the page down the table to me.
I read it standing.
It was my name, Ilse Brandauer, in blue ink at the bottom, and the whole page below it was a lie.
"That's not my hand," I said.
"The steward witnessed it," Brigitte said. "And the maid."
"Thea is in a hospital bed with a hole in her shoulder."
"She signed as witness on the Monday. She wasn't shot until you took her to a church."
Someone in the back rows coughed.
The eldest picked up the page, held it at arm's length and frowned.
"Bring the girl a pen," he said.
A clerk set one in front of me.
"Write your name under hers," the eldest said. "Slowly. Let the room see."
I signed on the back of the page.
The nuns had taught me a plain, upright hand, and the capital I was a single straight stroke.
