Chapter 17: Senior Night
Senior Night was sold out.
Four thousand people in red, and a red carpet rolled out across center ice for the second intermission.
I stood in the tunnel in my competition dress, dark green, with my skate guards on and my heart going.
The coach had not given my slot to the juniors.
He'd walked past me in the hall before the game and looked right through me.
"He thinks you'll fold," Kat had said that morning, pinning my bun. "He doesn't know you're from Dorchester."
Now she was up in the corner seats with Luc.
He'd come in a plain black coat, no green, and sat where I could find him.
"No fists," I'd said in the truck.
"No fists. I'll sit on my hands."
Brynn was in the student section with her phone up, live to ninety thousand people.
The horn went for the end of the second period. Bayhill was up two to one.
The players went off. The carpet went on.
The seniors' families came out and lined up along it in their good coats.
Chase's mother was there in a camel coat, holding a bouquet.
Beside her stood a gray-haired man in a dark suit with a jersey folded over his arm. The NHL team's executive. The jersey had PRENTISS across the back.
