Chapter 21: His Father's Verdict

Rafferty's mother stood up in the front row so fast her chair went over backward.

"That's a lie," she said. "That is a lie."

Nobody answered her.

Two hundred people were looking at the clubhouse, where a blue dress had just disappeared through the glass doors.

Then they looked back at Rafferty.

He was standing on the lawn below the platform, in his white dinner jacket with a grey streak of extinguisher powder down one sleeve.

"Kels," he said. "She got in your head. That's what she does."

Kelsey laughed. It came out of her cracked.

"She didn't get in my head, Rafferty. You did. Two years ago, the first week."

She turned to the guests again.

"Every one of you saw that video from her wedding. Him shouting that she's sick."

Phones came up all over the lawn, one after another.

"He knew she wasn't," Kelsey said. "He knew it was real the whole time."

"I asked him once if he felt bad, calling her crazy. You know what he said?"

She looked at Rafferty.

"He said, 'It's not lying if nobody else can see it.'"
