Chapter 24: One String
I took the pie.
It was heavier than it looked. Something inside it sloshed.
"Cherry," Cal's mother said. "From a can. I haven't baked since nineteen ninety-eight."
"It shows," Cal's father said.
She didn't look at him. She looked at me.
"I came to your bakery with a checkbook," she said.
"I was wrong. I wanted to say it out loud, in front of him, because he told me so in June."
Behind her, Cal's father studied the smoke detector package very hard.
"That's all," she said. "I'm not asking for anything."
I looked at her head out of habit.
Her one old string, dark as tea, ran down the steps to the man with the toolbox.
It wasn't bright. But somebody had been trying. It had warmed toward rust since June.
"Do you want coffee?" I said. "I don't have chairs."
"We've had worse," she said.
They sat on my kitchen floor.
Cal came down the stairs in his jeans and stopped on the bottom step.
His parents were on my linoleum, eating terrible pie off paper towels.
