Chapter 13: Eighty Candles

I didn't take the chain off the door.

Behind me, I heard Christian get up off the couch.

He came to the door barefoot, in his tuxedo trousers and nothing else, and looked at Portia over my shoulder.

His chest was warm against my back.

His hand settled on my hip, over his own shirt, and stayed there.

I could feel each of his fingers through the cotton.

Last night those fingers had been everywhere.

My skin remembered every place, and heat climbed up my neck in front of the last woman on earth I wanted to see it.

I didn't step away from him.

I leaned back into his hand instead.

Portia's eyes went to his bare chest, then to his shirt on me.

Her mouth pinched.

"Christian," she said. "We need to talk. Alone."

"Anything you say to me, you say to my wife."

"I'm having your baby."

"No," Christian said, "you're not."

"London. The Connaught. You don't remember?"

"I remember nine minutes at a bar. I remember you sitting down without asking."

His voice was flat.

"I remember paying for my own drink and leaving."

"I've never been in a room with you with the door shut, Portia. Not since business school. Not once."
