Chapter 10: The Needle

The first shot came through the warehouse door at ten past two on Monday afternoon.

Ben was kneading.

He heard the crack, then the whine, then a pan fell off the rack with a clang.

Dario hit him from the side and took him to the concrete behind the steel desk.

More shots followed.

Bullets chewed the roll-up door, and slivers of old brick rained down.

Dario's whole big body covered Ben's with his arms wrapped over his head.

"Stay down," Dario said in his ear.

"They're shooting at us!"

"Stay down!"

He rolled off and came up on one knee with the pistol he had taken from the man in the bakery.

He fired three times through the gap by the hinge.

Someone outside screamed.

Engines roared.

Tires bit gravel, and a car peeled away, and then there was only the ringing in Ben's ears and the smell of burned powder.

"Are they gone?"

Dario didn't answer.

He was kneeling in the dust with the pistol hanging from his hand, and his white shirt was turning red from the shoulder down.
