Chapter 14: Two Shots Up

"He took them for the family," Ben said. "That's what the prosecutor said."

"The prosecutor said what a prosecutor says." Gaetano picked up his wine. "Do you want to know what you saw, baker? In the alley?"

"I know what I saw."

"You saw a man on his knees in a camel coat. You saw my son with a gun."

"Yes."

"And before the flash, you heard something small."

Ben's mouth went dry.

The prosecutor had never asked about it, and Ben had never said it, because it had seemed too small to matter.

A flat dry cough from somewhere above him.

Then the man in the coat fell forward onto the wet bricks.

Then the white flash, and the real bang that rang off the walls.

He had been standing in the back door of the shop with a bag of trash in each hand.

For five years he had thought the cough was a car backfiring on 26th Street.

"There was a man on the roof," Ignazio said gently, from behind his chair.

Ben turned his head.

Ignazio was smiling.

"Roofline of the club," Gaetano said. "Two stories up, with a good clear angle on an alley. My nephew is a patient man, and he shoots very well."
