Chapter 20: Off the Lead

"Off the lead," Ben said.

He said it with his back against the penthouse door and his shirt already on the floor.

Dario stopped with both hands halfway to his belt.

The curtains were drawn across the wall of glass, and the bedroom was lit by a single lamp on the nightstand.

Two of the chief deputy's people were sitting in the lobby thirty floors down, drinking vending-machine coffee.

It was Saturday, a quarter to nine, and tomorrow at two o'clock they were supposed to walk into Beverly.

"Say that again," Dario said.

"No hands where I put them. No waiting for my word." Ben's voice was low and rough. "I'm done telling you where to touch me."

"Ben."

"You've been standing still for me since the day you walked into my shop. You held still when I tied you up. You held still in a car." He pushed away from the door. "I'm not scared of you anymore. So take what you want."

Dario looked at him.

His chest was rising and falling hard, and his eyes had gone nearly black.

"You can say go," he said hoarsely. "Any time. The door..."

"The door's been open since the first night. I never went through it." Ben took one step. "Dario. I'm telling you to stop asking."

Dario crossed the room in two strides and took Ben's face in both hands.

He kissed him.

He did not kiss with frantic desperation.
