Chapter 11: Sorry

Becky's POV

"You told him where I am," I said.

Cade stood in the bathroom doorway with his phone in his hand, and he didn't pretend.

"Yes."

"After the barn. After you stood in front of me and said you only wanted to be close because you wanted to."

"Becky."

"You made a decision about me again without asking."

"Boone is the only one who can stop Sunday's vote."

"Boone is the man who gave the order!"

The words came out too loud, and in the other chair Elena flinched.

I lowered my voice.

"Get her a room," I said. "Use her money. Put her where she can sleep."

Cade did it without arguing.

He took Elena next door to room five, and I stood at the window with my arms around myself and watched the rain drip off the edge of the roof.

He came back and shut the door.

He did not sit.

"I'm sorry," he said.

The word hung in the room.

I turned from the window.

"That's the rule," I said. "I said if you said it, I'd stop."

"I know."

"So I stop."

"I know what I said." His voice was raw. "I've kept the rule all night. I kept it while she stood there and I felt what I did to you like a nail. I can't keep it. I'm sorry I called him. I'm sorry I stood in your kitchen. I'm sorry I'm the kind of man who needed you to be hurt before I opened my mouth."

I should have left.

I should have put on my jeans and walked down the road.

Instead I crossed the room.
