Chapter 13: The Guard
I pressed my thumb to the new mark until he hissed.
"You took that for me."
"I'd take worse."
He sat up and buttoned his shirt over both scars, and the bed felt cold without him.
"We can change what happens next," I said.
"We've changed a lot already. Ada is alive."
"And Carlo is still outside."
He went to the window over the courtyard.
Three guards were clearing broken glass from the stones.
One of them was young enough to hide fear badly.
In the first life Carlo caught a young guard alone.
I remembered the boy's mother shouting at the funeral.
"Call him inside," I said.
Matteo saw where I was looking.
"He has a post to keep."
"Carlo knows his post."
Matteo sent a guard down to relieve him.
