Carlo held the gun out.
"She was going to use it on her husband."
The hall broke into hard whispers.
I had denied worse things to smaller rooms.
This time I kept my feet where they were.
"I did use it," I said.
Carlo blinked.
"In the life I remember, I shot Matteo."
One man laughed. Another crossed himself.
I let both sounds pass.
Carlo looked delighted for one beat.
He thought my confession would end the argument.
Then he saw Matteo had not moved away from me.
"Ask him why he still keeps me here," I told the hall.
The oldest elder turned toward Matteo.
"Because she's mine," Matteo said. "Anyone here want to argue it?"
