Chapter 13: The First Hour
Dane saw it a half second after I did.
He was out of the bed and across the room in his boxers before I had the quilt up to my chin.
He didn't open the lid.
He took the laptop in both hands, shut as it was, with the green line glowing along the seam, and he carried it out into the hall.
I heard him go down the stairs.
I heard the kitchen drawer where Marlene kept the foil, and then the freezer door.
When he came back he had his phone in his hand and his jaw set hard.
"I put it in the deep freeze under the venison," he said.
"Cold kills the battery.
"It won't see anything but ice."
"He watched us," I said.
My voice came out thin.
"Whoever it was watched us in your bed."
"Whoever it was watched a quilt and two people under it," Dane said.
"It was dark."
"That is not the point."
"No," he said.
"It isn't."
He sat on the edge of the mattress with his back to me and dialed.
It was 3:10 in the morning.
"It's Dane Kneupper," he said, when someone answered.
"I need you up.
"I'll be at your kitchen table in twenty minutes with something you need to see."
He listened.
"No.
"Not tomorrow.
"Now."
He hung up and stood and pulled on his jeans.
"My lawyer," he said.
"He lives out on Live Oak Creek."
"I'm coming," I said.
"You're not," he said.
"You are going to stay here, and lock this door behind me, and sit with my mother until I'm back."
"I'm the one who knows how it works," I said.
"I'm the one who lived with it."
