Chapter 20: The Witness Box
Katrina's POV
I wore the blouse with the blue anchors, because it was the one I had signed my name in.
The Gillespie County courthouse stood on the square under its limestone clock tower, and by a quarter to nine the courtroom was full.
I had not expected that.
Half of Fredericksburg had come to watch the Kneuppers.
I saw Mrs. Hartmann in the third row with her purse in her lap.
I saw the Fehrenbachs and the feed-store men.
Eighty people from the warehouse stood packed along the back wall in their Sunday shirts, with their hats in their hands.
Dane had not asked them.
They had come on their own.
He sat at the front table in a dark suit I had never seen.
His lawyer sat on one side of him and his mother on the other.
Lottie sat in the first row between Marlene's sister and a social worker with a kind, tired face.
She wore her yellow sundress and held Mister by the ear.
She looked at me when I came in, and she lifted two fingers off the rabbit's head.
I lifted mine.
Across the aisle, Cody Loessin sat at his own table in a borrowed jacket that didn't fit.
His hair was wet-combed and his beard was trimmed.
Beside him sat his lawyer, in a good gray suit.
A row behind them sat Brady, with his hands folded and his dimple switched off.
The deputy had let him go on his own recognizance.
He had a lawyer of his own, a boy of thirty with a briefcase.
He did not look at me.
The judge came in.
She was a woman of sixty with a gray bun and a stern, closed face.
She took the bench and read the name of the case aloud.
Cody's lawyer stood and spoke for ten minutes.
He said the child had been left with a bachelor who could not sleep and a string of unqualified nannies.
