Chapter 7: Britt

Ansel recovered first.

"Well," he said, and smiled, wide and bright. "That's a new way to chair a committee."

Neil dragged the sheet up to his ribs.

"Get out."

"I'm going. I brought coffee, and I'm leaving it." Ansel set the tray on the dresser without looking at the bed. "Jude, there's a plate of eggs downstairs for you. Gran says you can eat them in the kitchen like a civilized man."

Jude lifted his head, blinking.

He took in the room in half a second.

"Morning, Ansel," he said, and his voice was rough with sleep. "I fell off the couch."

"In his bed?"

"The couch has a bad spring."

"Sure it does." Ansel was still smiling.

He turned in the doorway.

"Don't worry, Neil. I won't tell a soul. What you do in your own bed is your business."

He closed the door softly behind him.

Neil sat up and put his face in his hands.

"He saw."

"He saw two men in a bed. He's not going to faint."

"He's going to talk."

"He said he wouldn't."

"He says everything with a smile," Neil said, and then wondered why he had.

Jude sat up beside him and tried to pull his hand away from his face.

Neil let him.

"Hey," Jude said. "It's all right."

"Nothing is all right."

"The doctor said you shouldn't spiral."

"The doctor said no stress, and I slept with my enemy twice."

"Three times if you count the bathroom."

Neil gave him a murderous look.

Jude grinned and kissed his temple.
