Chapter 16: Fifteen Years

We went up in my car, because Jace didn't have a truck anymore.

I found that out at seven on Tuesday morning, when he came down my front steps on foot with his hands in his jacket pockets.

"Where's the truck?"

"Sold it."

"When?"

"Last night. A guy in Sun Prairie. He's wanted it for a year."

He got into my passenger seat and folded his knees up against my glovebox.

I didn't ask him why.

I didn't have to.

We didn't talk much on 41.

His mom opened the door of the yellow house before we were out of the car.

She wasn't wearing a tiara this time.

She was in a grey cardigan with her reading glasses pushed up in her hair, and she didn't hug Jace.

She hugged me.

Then she pointed at the kitchen.

"You," she said to her son. "Sit."

He sat.

The kitchen table still had the cribbage board on it from the birthday.

She didn't sit.

She stood across from him with her arms folded and her chin up, all five feet of her.

"Fifteen years," she said. "Fifteen years I did that man's books. I knew where every dollar went. I knew when his wife's car was really a company car. I knew a lot of things."
