Chapter 18: Respect on Campus

Kenzie didn't call back all day.

At noon I got one text from her.

Phone off on purpose. He checks it. Trust me. Sit close.

The student union theater had six hundred red velvet seats, and by six-thirty every one of them was full.

People were sitting in the aisles.

There was a camera on a tripod in the center aisle with a little red light, and a laptop on a table next to it showing the livestream count.

Four thousand watching.

Gretchen and I sat in the fourth row on the left, right next to the open microphone stand.

The captain sat two seats down, in a black turtleneck, very straight.

Two campus security officers stood by the stage door with their arms folded.

One of them had looked at me when I came in.

I'd waved.

In the front row, center, sat Tanner's parents.

His mother in the camel coat.

His father in a quarter-zip, with his phone face down on his knee.

The moderator, a junior from the debate team in a blazer, tapped the podium microphone.

"Welcome to the candidate town hall," she said. "We'll have opening remarks, then the candidate, then open questions. To introduce the candidate, please welcome Kenzie Albers."

The applause was big and confused.

Kenzie walked out from the wing in her dance-team jacket, with her ponytail up and the bow in it.

She didn't look at me.

She went to the podium and adjusted the microphone down, because Tanner had set it for himself.
