Chapter 6: September

"Not here," I said.

I pulled her into the bathroom.

It was warm and bright and smelled like hand soap, and two girls at the mirror took one look at us and left.

Kenzie leaned against the sinks with her arms wrapped around her puffer.

Up close she looked even younger. Glitter on her eyelids. A dance-team keychain on her zipper.

"He said September," she said again. "First week. He said you guys were basically roommates and you were being dramatic about moving out."

"When did you meet him?"

She lifted her chin.

"Move-in week. He was a welcome volunteer. He carried my mini fridge up four flights."

Late August.

He'd come home from that volunteer shift and told me the freshmen were exhausting.

"And Friday," I said. "The dare."

"My friends dared me to kiss the hottest guy at the party."

She swallowed.

"I picked him because he was my boyfriend. I thought it was funny. I didn't know you'd be standing right there."

"He knew I'd be standing right there."

She didn't say anything.

I took out my phone.

I didn't want to do this to her. She was eighteen and had glitter on her face.

But she'd asked.

I scrolled back to September twentieth and turned the screen around.

It was a photo from our anniversary dinner. The Italian place on the Square, with the candles in the wine bottles.

Tanner's hand was on top of mine on the white tablecloth.

He'd written the caption himself. Two years with my favorite person. Here's to forever.

The post had his comment under it. A string of red hearts.

Kenzie looked at it for a long time.

"That's the twentieth," she said.

"Yes."

"He told me he had a family dinner that night." Her voice cracked. "His grandma's birthday."
