Chapter 11: The Card in My Pocket

Costa's POV

I woke at six with her hair across my arm and the sun on the quilt.

She slept on her stomach with one hand under the pillow, the bandage on her palm gone gray at the edges.

I lay there and counted the ways I could say it.

None of them worked.

I eased my arm out and went down the stairs in my trousers and bare feet.

My jacket hung on the hook by the door.

The cream card was in the inside pocket, where it had been for two weeks.

I took it out and looked at it.

The front said, in Russell's engraved script, that Mr. and Mrs. Russell Pickering requested the pleasure of my company at the engagement lunch of their son, Nigel, and Miss Keeva Coombs.

Under the words was a printed photograph of the two of them on a boat, her hair blowing across her face and her mouth open in the middle of a laugh.

I had looked at that laugh for ten days before I flew home.

I had carried the card into the Harcourt bar the night before the lunch.

I had been sitting there with the whiskey I didn't want, turning it face down, when a woman walked in and ordered a club soda and sat two stools from mine.

I knew her at once.

She was thinner than in the picture.

She laughed at her phone, and it was not the laugh on the card.

So I had stayed where I was, and I had said nothing about the photograph.

I told myself I would only talk to her.

Then she took off the ring.

Then she asked me upstairs.

I should have said no.

I had meant to say no, in the elevator, and I had meant it in the hall.

I told myself that if Russell's son's bride wanted to walk into the room with me, I would be an idiot to refuse her.
