Chapter 18: A Hundred Times Over

Keeva's POV

My father was in the kitchen at seven the next morning, washing the same cup for the third time.

I told him about the hall drawer.

He listened with his back to me and his hands in the water.

"They took the page," he said.

"Yes."

"And the carbon is in the store safe."

"Yes, Dad. Nobody knows that but you and me and Nigel."

"Nigel." My father shook his head.

He dried his hands on the towel and turned around.

He looked older than he had a week ago, and thinner, and he stood very straight.

"Sit down, honey. I have something to say, and I've been practicing it for days."

I sat.

He took the chair across from me and put both hands flat on the table.

"I have six stores," he said. "Five of them are on land I own outright. One of them has your mother's name painted on the window."

"I know, Dad."

"I'd have lost every one of them a hundred times over before I sold you for them."

I opened my mouth, and nothing came out.

"I let it get this far," he said. "I told myself it was a business loan, and I told myself you'd get a good husband out of it. I told myself a lot of things I'd have been ashamed to say out loud."

"You were scared."

"I was a coward," said my father. "I'm nearly sixty, and I'm just now finding out what I'm made of. It turns out I'm made of hardware."
