Chapter 7: The Key in Her Drawer
I told Nigel to meet me the next evening at a quiet bar in the Seaport.
Costa sat at a table in the corner with a newspaper and a coffee.
We had agreed on it that morning, over my father's kitchen table and a pot of terrible tea.
"I'll be where you can see me," Costa had said. "If it goes wrong, you touch your earring."
"It won't go wrong."
"Touch your earring anyway."
Nigel arrived late, with his hair combed and his eyes clear, wearing the face of a man who had rehearsed in a mirror.
He sat across from me and put his hands together.
"First, I'm sorry," he said.
"That's a good start."
"I made a stupid mistake. I was scared of the wedding." He leaned in. "Brooke was a way to blow off steam. That's all it was."
"For two years."
"It wasn't serious."
"You said you'd get your hands on the Coombs lots."
He winced.
"Dad's idea," he said. "He wants the land. I told you, it was his plan, not mine."
"And you're telling me this why?"
He looked around, and he lowered his voice.
"Because I'd rather have you than the land. I'd rather have you than all of it."
I made myself reach across the table and touch his wrist.
His skin was cold and damp, and I kept my hand there anyway.
"Then prove it," I said. "You said you know where the page is."
His face lit.
He had never been smart, Nigel, only quick.
"Safe-deposit box in the Harcourt vault," he said. "Dad keeps the old company papers there, and the key is in Brooke's desk drawer. She does his errands."
