Chapter 14: The Spy's Report
Halcourt's counting house was on the top floor of a grey building in Coin Street, with a view of the Exchange clock.
Odalys went on foot, alone, at ten the next morning, and the clerks in the outer office stood up when she came in.
He received her in a room paneled in walnut, behind a desk with a bowl of sugared almonds on it.
"Miss Marenne," he said. "I hoped you'd come."
"I came to tell you to stop slipping notes under my door."
"Sit."
"I'll stand."
"As you like." He folded his hands. "You asked a question of the Grand Duke last night?"
"I haven't yet."
"Then you may as well hear my answer first. It will make yours better."
He opened a drawer and took out a thin folder tied with grey tape.
"On the night of the thirtieth of November, the night you stayed at your father's house with your brother, my man followed His Grace of Drevoss from the palace door." He turned a page. "Half past eleven, on foot. He walked along the river for twenty minutes, then turned into the Silver Swan on Candle Street, a gentlemen's card club that I own a share of."
