Chapter 5: Team Lead

The Lakeview office sat on the water, and on my first morning the whole east wall was glittering.

I stood in front of it with my box of notebooks and my train-ticket stub, and for a moment I forgot to be nervous.

Hugh's last line had ridden the train with me for three hours.

You always come back, Jo.

Somewhere past the second tunnel I had answered it out loud, to an empty window seat.

"Watch me."

I had turned my phone off at the station, and I did not turn it on again until I sat down at my new desk.

"You're the new copywriter!" A woman with red curls and enormous gold earrings jumped out of her chair. "Maud. I'm your desk neighbor. I brought you a muffin. It's blueberry. If you hate blueberry, that's a character flaw, and we'll discuss it."

"I like blueberry," I said.

"Good. Then we can be friends."

She walked me to my desk and told me everything in one breath.

Where the good coffee was. Which printer jammed. Which meeting rooms had windows, and which had a heater that screamed.

"And that," Maud said, lowering her voice, "is the boss."

I looked across the room.

A tall man stood at the glass wall of the corner office, reading something on a tablet, with his shirtsleeves rolled to the elbow.

He had dark hair going silver at the temples and a thin scar through his left eyebrow.

He did not look up.

"Ivo Sandberg," Maud said. "He's fair, he's fast, and he hates small talk. Last quarter someone brought him a birthday cake, and he thanked her and went back to work."
