It took forever.
Nobody made a sound.
Kayleigh watched him come with her chin up.
He climbed the steps and stopped between us.

Then he looked at me.
"Mr. Merrick," the chair said. "You're listed as a co-founder of Shelfswap. Can you confirm Ms. Danvers designed this artwork?"
Connor took a folded paper out of his jacket.
His hands were shaking.
"No," he said. "I can't."
Kayleigh's smile froze.
"Con."
"Hallie drew every screen," Connor said into the microphone. "Every owl. Since junior year. On the floor of my living room, at Rosetti's, on the bus. Kayleigh never drew any of it. Neither did I."
The room broke into noise.
The chair raised a hand until it settled.
"She was never our employee," Connor went on. "We never paid her. We never asked her. We just took it."
He unfolded the paper.
"This is an email Kayleigh sent me in December, the night we both got into Westmere. I'm going to read it."
