Chapter 7: The Upgrade

I went down in my socks and my old Rosetti's sweatshirt.

By the time I pushed open the front door, the lobby was full of girls pretending to check their mail.

Connor stood at the bottom of the steps with rain running off his chin.

"Hal."

"You said you were at a party."

"I was. Fall break. Some guy from high school had a thing in Linden Falls." He wiped his face. "I got a ride. I had to see you."

"You're drunk and it's one in the morning."

"I'm not that drunk."

He came up two steps.

I didn't move down any.

"I made a mistake," he said. "Okay? I made a huge mistake. I should have told you about Westmere. I should have fought for you."

A window slid open above us.

Somebody whispered, "Oh my God."

"What do you want, Connor?"

He took a breath.

"We need you."

There it was.

"The Keystone qualifier's in three weeks," he said. "Our designs aren't working. The judges at the Westmere showcase said the app looks, and I'm quoting, like a tax form."

"Kayleigh did the designs."

"Kayleigh can't draw." He said it flat, like it cost him something. "You know she can't draw. Everybody knows now."

"So hire somebody."

"We tried. Nobody gets it like you do. Nobody gets Dewey."

He reached into his wet jacket and pulled out a folded paper.

"Five percent," he said. "Of the company. Kayleigh agreed. That's real, Hal. That's more than anybody offers a designer."
