Chapter 17: The Iron Challenge

The Iron wolves cleared a circle in the middle of the hall, and nobody told them how wide.

Garrick came to my side with Percival's pistol in his belt.

"Don't," I said, before he opened his mouth.

"I wasn't going to."

"You were going to offer."

"I was going to say your left side is weak," he said. "Dorian always drops his right shoulder before he turns."

I looked at him.

"You watched him?"

"For a year, from behind a pillar," he said. "I hated him on principle."

I shrugged out of his coat and handed it over.

He took it, and his fingers brushed mine, and neither of us said anything.

Then I walked into the ring.

Dorian was already stripped to his trousers, with his tawny hair pushed back.

He was beautiful, and I hated him for it.

"Last chance," he said. "Kneel, and I'll tell her to let you keep your teeth."

"Take the shot, Dorian."

He shifted.

It was fast, and it was ugly, and when it was over a big gold wolf stood in front of me with a scar over one eye where his father's ring had split him.

He was heavier than I was, and he had been training all his life.

I shifted, and the hall rang with it.

He came at me before I had finished.

The first blow knocked me across the ring.

I hit the stone on my side, and the air left me, and for a moment I saw nothing but white.

His jaws closed on my shoulder.

It was a hot, dragging pain, and I screamed into the stone.

I twisted and kicked him off with my hind legs, and I felt fur tear.

He circled me, panting, while I got my feet under me.

"I've been hunting since I was six," his voice said in my head, thick and wet.

I had not known a wolf could speak so.

"I've been shot at for two days," I thought back.
