Chapter 20: Dawn
Rhiannon's POV
I walked down the hill to the Moonhall at first light, alone, in my father's captain's coat.
Garrick stood at the top of the ridge with the four Alphas and three thousand wolves behind him.
He had not argued when I said I would go.
He had put his hand on my cheek in front of all of them, and kept it there one breath longer than he should.
"Come back," he said.
"Don't you dare follow."
"I'll follow when you scream."
I smiled, and I walked.
The grass was wet.
The gate of the Moonhall was open, and four hundred guards stood in the courtyard in black, in three rows, with their rifles at their shoulders.
They watched me come up the drive.
Nobody said a word.
I stopped at the foot of the great marble steps, where my father had once stood to greet the Alphas of every House.
At the top of the steps stood my mother.
She wore the grey cloak, and her hair was braided back, and she held my uncle's Regent seal in her palm.
"Good morning, daughter," she said.
"Mother."
"You came alone."
"You asked me to."
"And the ring?"
I held up my right hand.
The red stone caught the dawn.
"Guards of the Moonhall," my mother said, in a voice that rang from the walls. "The woman at the foot of these steps shot her own father at her own birthday. The Regent's seal has declared her an outlaw. Take her."
Nobody moved.
"Take her!"
A hundred rifles trained on my chest.
I recognized the guard at the front of the line, a broad man with a gray beard who had once taught me to carry a rifle on my shoulder without bruising it.
