Chapter 15: The Cell
The kitchen girl said she had seen Evander in the pantry at dawn on audience day, with the gold cup in his hands.
She said it to the floor, in a dry little whisper, with the regent's guard breathing behind her.
She said she had seen him pour something into the dregs from a green bottle.
She had not seen his face.
She had seen the size of his back.
Florian asked her three questions.
Who told her to look at the cup that morning, how long she had been in the Chancellor's service, and whether she could read.
She answered the first with her eyes on Lord Basil, and she could not answer the others at all.
It was enough to make the room uneasy, and not enough to save Evander.
The regent moved the matter to Bell Court, the next day at noon, where the full peerage would sit.
"The law is the law, Your Highness," said Basil, with tears in his eyes.
"The Regent holds the cells until the Crowning.
"Not even you can sign a door open."
They took Evander down.
The cell was under the east guardhouse, six steps below the yard, with a drain in the floor and a stone bench along one wall.
A ring was set in the stone above the bench.
They chained his wrists to it, short, so that he had to sit with his arms raised, and went away with their lantern.
Evander sat in the dark and listened to water drip.
He did not think of the oath.
He thought of a small hand closing over his on Maren's knife.
He thought of the prince's face when he read out his own name to the lords.
A long time later a key turned.
It was not the jailer's step.
