Chapter 15: The Van
Odette packed my bag herself.
Monday, eight-thirty, in the third-floor room I'd never slept in.
She folded my yellow dress in tissue paper and laid it on top.
"You'll want something nice for the horses," she said, loud enough for the stairs.
Then, softer, just to me: "Ten hours, Minnie. You'll like it. They've got a big kitchen."
I let her zip it.
You let the client pack if the client wants to pack.
Mom was waiting at the bottom of the stairs in sunglasses.
She'd been crying since six. I'd heard her through two floors.
She held out a lunch bag, the insulated kind, with my name written on a piece of tape.
"Turkey," she said. "And grapes. And a cookie from the place you liked."
"Thank you, ma'am."
She flinched at the ma'am.
She took my hand to walk me out.
Her rings bit into my fingers again. She didn't let go.
The whole street was out.
It was a nice morning, and a white van at the Westbrook gate is news.
The man in the golf shirt was on his lawn with a coffee, beside the stakes where his hydrangeas used to be.
