Chapter 18: The Dress
The dress came in a white box from a shop on King Street, with tissue and a card from the judge.
I did not open the card until the end.
I put the box on the bed in the apartment over the barn office and lifted the lid, and the dress lay in the tissue.
It was grey silk, bias-cut, with a low back and no sleeves, the color of the harbor on a winter morning.
I had paid for it myself, three days ago, out of the last of my father's savings.
I held it up in front of the long mirror on the closet door.
"I'd like to zip it," Anson said from the doorway.
I looked at him in the glass.
"You'd like to."
"I'd like to," he said. "If you'll let me."
"You're asking."
"I'm telling you what I want before I do it. It's still on the card."
I turned my back to him.
I stepped into the dress and drew it up over my hips and held it against my chest.
He crossed the room.
He did not touch my skin.
He took the little tab of the zipper between two fingers at the base of my spine and drew it up, very slowly, one tooth at a time.
I felt it close along my back.
I felt the heat of him an inch behind me, and the breath on my shoulder.
At the top he stopped.
"There," he said.
His hands were still on the tab.
I looked at us in the mirror, his dark head over my fair one and the grey silk and the lamp.
"Don't move," I said.
"I'm not."
"Put your hands on the glass."
He lifted his arms and set his palms flat on the mirror either side of my head.
