Chapter 23: Sold
We drove to Ravenel in my truck with the windows down, and neither of us said a word until the barn.
The yard was dark.
The pines stood black against a sky full of stars, and the peepers were going in the ditch.
I parked beside the big door and turned off the engine and sat with my hands on the wheel.
"Detty," he said.
"Not here," I said. "Inside."
I took the gavel and the grey silk bunched in my fist and walked in ahead of him.
The barn was cold and smelled of hay.
I threw the breakers one after another, all the long banks of lights down the rafters, and they came up slow and yellow and then full, until the whole old cattle barn stood lit from end to end for the first time since my father's funeral.
The sale ring glowed.
The oak block stood in the middle of it, with its three steps and its rail.
My ring lay where I had left it on the ledger table, on the line for the last lot.
I picked it up.
I looked at it for a while.
Then I put it in the drawer of my father's desk, with the old lot cards, and shut the drawer.
"Come here," I said.
He came.
He stopped in the center of the ring in his charcoal suit, in the full light, with his hands at his sides.
He looked tired and raw and nearly young.
"I'm going to say my terms," I said.
"Yes," he said.
"Not on a card. Out loud, in the ring, where I do it."
"Yes," he said again.
"I'm not the Factor's woman," I said. "I'm not Lawson's. I'm not the Pelhams' and I'm not anybody's. I have a barn and a name on the sign, and I'll keep both."
"I'd never ask you to do otherwise," he said.
"I know. That's why I'm telling you."
