Chapter 11: Her Warm Hands
I walked two miles down Tern Road in the rain before I admitted I had nowhere to go.
I had a phone, nine dollars, and a coat that wasn't mine.
At the ferry lot I stopped under the bus shelter and stood there shaking.
A silver car pulled to the curb.
It wasn't Carter's.
The passenger window slid down, and Daphne leaned across the seat with her face full of concern.
"Willa! Oh, thank God. I was driving to the market and saw you walking. Get in, you're soaked."
I looked at her.
The coincidence should have bothered me.
I was too tired to be bothered, and too cold, and the heater was running.
I got in.
Her apartment was on the fourth floor of a building with a doorman. It smelled of jasmine and clean linen.
She put a towel around my shoulders and a mug of tea in my hands, and she knelt in front of me on the rug in her soft green sweater to untie my wet shoes.
"Tell me," she said gently. "Did he hurt you?"
"No."
"But something happened."
"His sister died on Harbor Road," I said. "He thinks I killed her."
My thumb found the phone in my pocket and pressed record.
Odessa had said to wait for a moment when someone felt safe and the room was listening.
I didn't know how to make a moment.
But Daphne's hands were warm around my ankles, and she looked up at me with so much sorrow that I thought she might be the only person alive who understood.
"Oh, honey," she said.
She sat back on her heels.
