Chapter 13: The Girl Who Waved
Odessa slept through the night, and Ben did not.
At six the doctor told us she would live through the week, and no one in that room said what came after.
Ben stood in the hospital corridor with his keys in his fist.
"I'm going to see him," he said.
"I'm coming."
"Willa."
"I know his voice and his lies, and you don't." I held out my hand for the keys. "I'm not letting you go alone."
He looked at my hand for a long moment, and then he put the keys in his pocket.
"You wait in the truck," he said. "You hear everything or you see nothing. That's the deal."
"Fine."
Linwood Homes kept its sales office in a glass trailer at the front of the Harlan development.
Ben parked beside a banner that said OWN THE WATERFRONT, and he left the driver's window down an inch so I could hear.
Then he walked in without knocking.
Carter sat behind a desk with a model of the shoreline on it, tiny plastic houses along a tiny plastic road.
He was eating a croissant.
"Ben Crane," he said, delighted. "Come to talk about your lease?"
"I came to talk about my sister."
Carter's chewing slowed.
"I'm sorry for your loss," he said. "I really am. But I don't see what it has to do with me."
"My mother says it has everything to do with you."
"Your mother is a convicted felon with a grudge, in a cell with the woman who killed her daughter." He wiped his fingers on a napkin. "Don't take her word over a signed plea."
"She's dying."
