Chapter 18: The Women of Cell 8
Six sheriff's trucks stood across the gate of Ben's yard, and a flatbed was backing up to the first of the tugs.
The crew stood in a line in front of the gate in their orange vests, with their arms folded.
There were nine of them, and the youngest was twenty.
"We're not moving," said the foreman, when Ben pulled up. "They can tow us with it."
The deputy in charge held up a paper.
"Court order," he said. "Breach of lease, unpaid rent, abandonment of premises. Everything on this property goes to the county impound."
"I paid rent every month for eleven years," Ben said.
"The landlord says otherwise."
"The landlord tore up nothing. I did." Ben got out of the truck. "Check the stamp on that paper. Check the date."
The deputy didn't look.
Behind the trucks, a black sedan rolled to a stop, and Morton Linwood stepped out in his navy overcoat with his heavy gold watch.
He had left the Harbor Club steps the moment the cameras turned on Daphne Slingsby.
He walked up the gravel.
"Mr. Crane," he said. "You embarrassed me last night. I'm sorry it has come to this."
"You're sorry."
"I have friends on the bench. I have friends on the county board. You and your wife made a very public error." He looked at me. "Errors have costs. That's all a lease is."
"She told the truth in public."
"Then she can live with the consequences in private."
Morton nodded to the deputy.
"Proceed."
The deputy took one step toward the gate, and a car horn blared behind him.
Then another.
A gray station wagon pulled up on the shoulder, and a white pickup behind it, and a rusted blue van, and a dented sedan.
