Chapter 13: Eight Thousand
Marit's POV
Dag finished his stew.
He wiped his beard with the napkin, folded it, and laid it beside the white plate that nobody had eaten from until tonight.
"It has been said," he told me.
"That is the rule, isn't it? Nobody leaves the table until it's said."
He stood and buttoned the camel coat.
"You have until the thirty-first, Ms. Isaksen. I'll see myself out."
He left the aquavit unopened beside the salt.
The front door closed, and the rain came in around the frame and went away again.
Nobody at my table moved.
Gunnar looked at the empty corner chair.
Henrik looked at his hands.
Jussi looked at me, and his face had no jokes left in it.
"Say it," I told him.
"Mari."
"Say where the eight thousand went."
He got up.
I will say this for him: he did not look at the floor.
"My father's boat," Jussi said.
"He fished out of Newport. The bank was coming for her on a Friday, and he was sixty-one years old, and she was all he had. Eight thousand dollars kept her off the dock until the season."
