Chapter 17: Cherry Wood

Henrik's POV

The cupola had thirty-two panes of old glass, and I had her facing most of them.

She knelt on Ingrid's cushioned bench with her palms against the cold window and her bare knees apart.

Below her the river ran black with the lights of Astoria shaking in it, and a pilot boat crept across the dark toward the bar.

Gunnar knelt behind her with his hands on her hips.

I knelt beside her and spoke into her ear.

"Your back is bowed," I said. "The long muscle on either side of your spine is shaking. You're wet down the inside of both thighs. I can see it in the glass."

She made a small sound.

"Your nipples have gone dark," I said.

"They're brushing the window every time you breathe. The cold makes them hard. You like that."

"Henrik," she whispered.

"Say more," said Gunnar, behind her, low and calm.

"Tell her all of it."

I told her.

It was the only way I had ever been able to say anything.

For eight months I had watched her from the attic window and counted the nights she left her door unlocked.

I had never said a word of it aloud.

Now I said it all.

I told her what I saw when she bent to tie her boots.

I told her what I did in the attic afterward, and how many times.

I told her that I had drawn her mouth two hundred times and had never once drawn it right, because it never held still.

She was shaking so hard the window rattled in its frame.

Gunnar slid two fingers into her from behind, and she cried out against the glass.

"Good girl," he said. "Listen to him. He's been saving it up."

"Turn around," Marit said, in a thick voice. "Gunnar. Sit."

She came away from the glass on her knees and pushed him back against the cushions.

He sat with his legs apart, thick and flushed and fierce, and she bent over his lap and took him in her mouth.

Gunnar's head went back against the frame.
