Chapter 30: His Father's Letter
Livio didn't open it on the hill.
He held the tin box against his chest all the way back to the car.
That night, in the apartment over Falcone's, he set it on the kitchen table and looked at it.
Orsola sat across from him. I sat at the end with Lina asleep in my lap.
"Do you want us to go?" I said.
"No," he said. "If it's about you, you're in the room."
He pried the lid up with a butter knife.
Inside was one envelope, thick, sealed with wax gone brown.
Livio opened the envelope and read the letter to himself.
It took a long time.
"Tomorrow," he said. "At the table."
Sunday was hot and bright.
The Chestnut Hill dining room had every window open.
Thirty people. The capos. The wives. The aunts and cousins. The priest, saying grace.
Ginevra's chair was gone. Somebody had moved the table so there wasn't a gap.
Orsola sat at Livio's right hand.
I cooked.
The gravy my way. The braciole. Orsola's soup.
Livio sat at the head of the table in the tall carved chair.
