Chase came down the corridor first, in a dinner jacket with his tie pulled loose.

Constance walked half a step behind him in a camel coat, her hair still in its smooth twist at six in the morning.

Neither of them looked at Otto's door.

They looked at Greer on the floor, then at me, then at Eli.

"What is this?" Constance said.

Nobody answered her.

Chase crouched beside Greer. "Hey. What did she say to you?"

"Don't touch me," Greer said, and she pulled her arm away.

At the nurses' station, a nurse had stopped typing. A father in a bathrobe stood at the vending machine with a coin in his hand, watching.

I hadn't known I would speak until I did.

"Embryo three of six," I said.

Chase stood up slowly.

"Eliza, you've been awake all night. Let's sit down somewhere."

"Harbor Fertility. Carrier, G. Whitby. Paid by the Ardmore Family Foundation." My voice came out level, and I was grateful for it. "You gave me a letter that said a freezer failed."

"I was protecting you."

"From what?"

"From hoping." He opened his hands. "You cried over those embryos for months, Eliza. You couldn't carry them. I couldn't watch you keep wanting something you'd never have."

"So you gave them to my friend."

"I kept them safe. They were ours."

"They were mine," I said. "You never asked me once."

"Chase." Constance did not raise her voice. "That is enough."

He looked at his mother. Then he looked at the floor, and I knew I had heard the true part.
