Chapter 5: Otto

Greer lived on the thirty-first floor of a glass tower on the Gold Coast.

The doorman had my name on a list. That told me she had planned this too.

She opened the penthouse door herself, in a cream sweater with her hair tucked behind her ears.

"Thank you for coming," she said.

I didn't answer. I walked past her into a living room with white furniture and a wall of windows over the lake.

There was a play mat on the floor and a basket of wooden blocks.

"He's just up from his nap," Greer said. "Come meet him."

I told myself I was going to look at him once and leave.

Otto sat on the mat in a striped shirt, banging a block on the floor.

He had chestnut curls, grey-green eyes and a drool-wet chin.

He looked up at me, held out the block and said something that was not yet a word.

"He likes you," said Greer.

"He likes everybody."

"No, he doesn't. He screams at the doorman."

I crouched. Otto put the block in my hand and then reached up with both arms.

I am a pediatric nurse. I have held a thousand babies.

I picked him up.

He weighed what a one-year-old weighs. He smelled of milk and baby shampoo.

He put his head on my collarbone and went quiet, and my eyes stung.

"Where's your husband?" I said, over his curls.

Greer sat down on the sofa and folded her hands.

"There isn't one."

"I know."

"Chase and I started in Singapore, the first time he flew out. I was lonely, and so was he." She looked at the lake. "Constance found out. She was kind to me. She said the baby should have the family name."
